Z Club Birthing Kits On Sunday 24 August, the HSC Z Club were delighted to host the assembly of birthing kits to be sent to assist women giving birth in developing countries.  It was a great success, resulting in 1600 kits being assembled.

Last week, I accompanied eight students and one staff member to the Year 10 ACTS Camp (A Chance To Share).  Our students and others attending the camp were very well-behaved and insightful.  We were visited by Bishop Michael and had a great time with Lauren, Diocesan Youth Minister, and Christian, our Presenter.

Eight students and one accompanying chaperone have been hosted by Holy Spirit College staff and students over the past three weeks.  These students attended classes and experienced everyday life in an Australian home.  Thank to the host families for generously opening their homes to these special visitors.

Each term, a Twilight Concert is held to give students in various Cultural groups the opportunity to showcase their skills for their parents and families.  The Twilight Concert held on Thursday 12 June at 5:00pm was a fantastic evening of entertainment for all!
The HSC Bullets were announced as the runner-up for the Junior B age division at the Regional Sullivans Netball Carnival this year.  The team travelled to Rockhampton on 24-25 May and played eight games against teams from the region including Biloela, Gladstone, Emerald, Rockhampton and Townsville in the Junior B age division.

On Friday 6 June, all of the Year 8 Science students attended an excursion to Cape Hillsborough to explore the landscape and rocks that can be found in this region. This activity forms part of the students’ assessment for their current unit: Earth Rocks. There was excellent weather on the day and it was great to see the students exploring and having a great time.

The HSC Open League Girls team have emerged victors of the Skills Training Mackay Schoolgirls Rugby League competition after winning every game in the competition. Congratulations to Year 12 student Madelin Brosnan, who was named Player of the Tournament, and Year 12 student Kya Mooney, who won the Blanche Sutherland Meld for player of the final.

HSC has won the Silver Heritage Champion School Award as part of the Mackay Regional Council’s biennial Heritage Awards. Mrs Neridah Kaddatz accepted the award for her research into the story of Father Pierre-Marie Bucas and his two nephews, all pioneering priests in Central and North Queensland in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Eight Year 11 students, who study Certificate I in Construction and Certificate I in Furnishing, have been selected to be part of the 2014/2015 Doorways to Construction (D2C) Program. This program will gain them certificates and competencies to assist in securing apprenticeships and jobs in the construction industry.

Students in Year 11 Religion & Ethics organised Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea recently. Congratulations to Casey Shaxson, Tegan Jansen, VJ Aia, Jennifer Palmeri and Hannah Penner for their intiative and hard work in raising just over $1,000 for the Cancer Council.

HSC offers an innovative and exciting Year 10 to Senior Program and a comprehensive Senior Course catering for both academic and vocational pathways. Year 10 students are guided to ‘tap their potential’ and assisted with self-reflection, goal setting, development of social & study skills, work readiness and preparation for Senior schooling. The program culminates in the Pathways through Senior @ HSC Expo & Parent Information Evening where there are departmental displays and displays from tertiary and other local providers across our region.

Past and present students and teachers gathered for dinner at the Windmill on Thursday 22 May to commemorate the 30th Anniversary since the first Year 8s enrolled at what was then Emmanuel Catholic School. A number of the original Year 8 students from the Class of 1984 attended as well as foundation teachers and past Principals. A special ceremony at the College Feast Day Mass was held the following day.
