GERARD BONAVENTURA graduated from HSC in 2002 and then joined the Royal Australian Air Force. He attended the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra from 2003-2005, concurrently completing Officer Training and a Bachelor of Science from the University of New South Wales. In 2006, he posted to RAAF BASE East Sale in Victoria where he underwent air traffic control training.

After graduating later that year, he went on to serve controlling postings at East Sale Aerodrome 2007-2009 and Townsville airport 2010-2012. In mid-2012, he posted to Darwin and began working with 1st Brigade, Royal Australian Army as a Battlefield Airspace Control Liaison Officer. Whilst fulfilling this role, he served on two deployments to southern Afghanistan in 2012 and 2013, providing battlefield airspace control services from the Australian base at Tarin Kowt in the Uruzgan province. FLTLT Bonaventura is due posting again at the end of this year.

Gerard has this advice for our students “nothing is unachievable if you are prepared to put in the hard work”.
