On Friday 22 August, we welcomed five students from Hiroshima to Holy Spirit College. For the last two years, students learning Japanese at HSC have been writing letters to students at the Ark Foreign Language centre in Hiroshima Prefecture. The students (all boys) come from a rural area on a small island just off the coast.
Hiroshima Prefecture is located in Central Japan and is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites:
- The Atomic Dome in Hiroshima (one of the very few remnants of pre-war Hiroshima following the atomic bombing in 1945); and
- Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima (famous for appearing to float on water during high tide).
