Lions Youth of the Year Competition

The second round of Lions Youth of the Year took place at Wests Leagues Club, Walkerston on Saturday 7 March, and was hosted by the Lions Club of Mirani Sugar Valley.  The winner of the club final, Maggie McCusker, competed on behalf of Holy Spirit College and Blue River Lions Club.  Maggie participated in an interview stage on Saturday morning.  This interview was conducted by a panel of judges comprised of Carole Weekes (former Teacher), Joy Evans (retired school Principal) and Daniel Strang (NAB).  Discussion topics ranged across the subjects of leadership qualities, the Abbott Point development and the impact of FIFO mining practices.

In the afternoon, competitors then responded to two impromptu topics.  The first topic was an opportunity for speakers to express their views on the current, and highly controversial, topic of the Australians awaiting execution in Bali.  In sharp contrast to this serious issue, the second topic dealt with the comment that ‘there is little for teenagers to do in the Mackay area’.   Maggie addressed these diverse and interesting topics in a confident, articulate and informed manner.

Following the impromptu presentations, each competing student presented a five minute prepared address on a topic of their choice.  Maggie presented an amusing and thoughtful reflection on the ‘Fear of Graduating’.  It was clear the audience found the speech entertaining.  Unfortunately, Maggie does not proceed to the next round of the quest; however, she has gained invaluable experience and confidence in real-life interview situations as well as gaining confidence in speaking in public.

Holy Spirit College would like to thank Blue River Mackay Lion’s Club for its sponsorship of Maggie into the second round of the competition, its support of the students and the opportunities it offers candidates in both the interview and public speaking aspects of the competition.

Congratulations to Maggie for the very impressive manner in which she represented the College, and herself, on the weekend.
