Four Year 7 Holy Spirit College students travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Readers Cup competition on 2 – 3 September.

The Readers Cup is a competition for Years 7 and 8 students which is organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia.  The competition was held at the State Library during the Brisbane Writers Festival.  Teams of four students are required to read and analyse five recently published fiction books and then compete with other teams by answering questions about the books.  An additional challenge for teams in the State Final is to create a ‘book trailer’ promoting one of the books studied.

The Holy Spirit College team of Year 7 students – Kate Miles, Ella Donnollan, Isaak Kahukiwa and Emma Bode – were successful in the regional competition in June and won first place at the State Finals for their book trailer, about ‘Intruder’ by Christine Bongers, this past week.

The Readers Cup is a wonderful competition for students who love reading.  Our team was very excited about competing against winning teams from all over Queensland and are thrilled to have won the book trailer competition.  They also enjoyed attending several author presentations at the Writers Festival.
