Year 10 Early Childhood Studies students had the opportunity, firsthand, to experience what goes on in a Maternity Ward. After spending many weeks studying pregnancy and childbirth, our students finally got the chance to see the facilities at the Mackay Base Hospital with an exceptional tour guide, Janene Moore, the Nurse Educator. We toured the antenatal clinic, special care nursery, labour ward and the birth centre. Without doubt the very special moment of the trip was seeing a tiny 4 week premature baby in an incubator in the special care nursery. Some of the other interesting points included the extensive array of equipment available to all mothers and the Birth Centre’s extra large birthing pool that was equipped with a hoist.
