One hundred Holy Spirit College students from Years 8 – 12, accompanied by five teachers, attended the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival on Friday 17 July. Students enjoyed a full day of author talks, performances, song writing and art workshops. This annual festival presents an amazing opportunity for students in a regional centre to listen to and work with authors, illustrators and performers as they discuss their work and the techniques they use. AJ Betts, an Australian author born in Tully, discussed her inspiration for writing. Shaun Kirk, at 26 years of age, is a blues singer/song-writer who shared his story and encouraged students to follow their dreams. Danny Katz is a stand-up comic and a columnist for variety of newspapers. His inspiration for writing is his family and his unique view of life. A song-writing workshop by Graeme Connors and an artist workshop with Emma Quay were attended by music and art students respectively. The final session was a talk by a young Greek-Australian, Will Kostakis, who published his first novel as a teenager and won the Sydney Young Writer of the Year award in 2005. During the breaks between presentations, many students visited the bookshop to purchase copies of the authors’ work and took advantage of the book signings by the authors.
